A fixed bed reactor, also known as a packed bed reactor, is a reactor filled with solid catalysts or solid reactants to achieve a multi-phase reaction process. The solid objects are usually in the form of particles, with a particle size of about 2 to 15 mm, and stacked into a bed of a certain height (or thickness). The bed is stationary and the fluid reacts through the bed. The difference between it and the fluidized bed reactor and the moving bed reactor is that the solid particles are at rest. Fixed bed reactors are mainly used to realize gas-solid phase catalytic reactions, such as ammonia synthesis towers, sulfur dioxide contact oxidizers, and hydrocarbon steam reformers. When used for gas-solid or liquid-solid non-catalytic reactions, the bed is filled with solid reactants. The trickle-bed reactor can be classified as a fixed-bed reactor, and the gas and liquid phase flow down through the bed layer in gas-liquid solid phase contact.
