Britain's plastic milk bottle recycling rate increased significantly

According to a new study published by Recoup, 72% of HDPE milk bottles consumed and recovered in the UK in 2009 were recycled, a significant improvement over the previous year's 57% regeneration rate.

It is estimated that in the UK, a total of 119,000 tons of HDPE plastic milk bottles were used in 2009. Among them, 86,790 tons were used for recycling, which reflected the increase in roadside recycling. It is estimated that plastic bottles recovered from the roadside accounted for 4/5 of the total amount of recycled plastic waste bottles.

James Crick, director of business development at bottle manufacturer Nampak, said: “This is good news for our company and the dairy industry because recycled HDPE can be recycled into rHDPE (recycled content) plastic milk bottles.”

“In all milk bottles we currently produce in the UK, rHDPE accounts for 10%, and we are now planning to work with customers to strive to increase this figure to 15% in October 2010. In the longer term, our The goal is to increase this ratio to 50% by 2020 or before."

He added: "The increase in the supply of recycled materials will enable us to provide customers with more high quality recycled content HDPE bottles."
