World Health Organization releases first indoor quantitative standard for toxic substances

The World Health Organization has released the "Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality", the first time that WHO has published quantitative standards for indoor toxic substances. Experts believe that this provides a scientific basis for the development of indoor environmental standards around the world.

The "Guide" pointed out that the source of indoor air pollution mainly comes from four aspects, namely, building materials, home appliances, heating equipment and smoke generated during cooking. The chemical pollutants in indoor air mainly include nine substances such as benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and helium. Among them, benzene ranks first, this kind of material is widely found in building materials, especially paint, which can cause cancer; the second place is carbon monoxide, the safety standard is no more than 7 mg per cubic meter of air in 24 hours. The third is formaldehyde. The safety standard is less than 0.1 mg per cubic meter of air. Excessive amounts can damage lung function.

In China, indoor environmental pollution mainly comes from benzene and formaldehyde. Benzene is mainly from paints and formaldehyde pollution comes from furniture materials. Although these pollutants have certain standards in the content of building materials, after the home decoration, these materials concentrate on releasing pollutants, and the indoor air is inevitably affected.

Experts suggest that newly renovated rooms should not be checked in immediately, and try to stay in half a year. Home decoration should try to choose products with environmental protection signs. In terms of furniture selection, the amount of formaldehyde in artificial boards is relatively high. It is best to use furniture with high degree of sealing of wooden board materials; newly bought furniture can be used for a while; wardrobes using artificial boards Whenever possible, do not put underwear and children's clothes; in the summer, the quilts, blankets and autumn and winter clothes in the closet will absorb a large amount of formaldehyde, and must be dried after being taken out. It should also be reminded that in winter, windows should be opened every day, no less than twice a day, no less than 30 minutes each time, so as to avoid aggravation of pollution; more green plants such as spider plants and aloe can absorb harmful gases in the air; Pay attention to adjusting the air humidity.
