Try Acer Sublimation Photo Printer

Acer's FotoPrisa 300P thermal sublimation photo printer (Figure 1) is a home-type thermal sublimation printing device that Taiwan Acer Corporation promoted to the mainland market in 2000. As the previous sublimation printing equipment was mainly concentrated in the professional field, it blocked the popularity of digital photography to some extent. Although high-quality flat images can be obtained by using color jetting technology, photographs printed by sublimation method are closer to traditional photographs in visual effects. The reason is that the image produced by the thermal sublimation technology is a continuous tone, which is consistent with the traditional photo. Obviously, the current development of home-used sublimation equipment will revolutionize future photo production technologies.
The early Acer products were mainly concentrated in the computer, a variety of drives and boards, the characteristics of which are the pursuit of practical results. In fact, Acer has considerable experience in developing home-based products. Aladdin is a commercial name used by Acer. In the 486 era, the Aladdin I-type motherboard (Fig. 2) achieved the optimal price-performance ratio with a simplified and highly effective design scheme. This 486 motherboard with integrated DX4 (clocked at 100 MHz) PCI architecture saves cache but uses two IDE interfaces. Like the 586, it can support 2.5G or more high-capacity hard disks and compatibility. Part 586 peripherals, the overall performance is similar to the early 586, which is rare in the 486 motherboard. Drawing on the history of the 586 development 486, Acer was once again used in the development of color image output devices, and it has been considered that the sublimation technology used in professional products has gone down the "altar" on the FotoPrisa 300P.
First, the principle of Acer FotoPrisa 300P In fact, the principle of Acer FotoPrisa 300P can be simply described as the principle of subtractive color (YMC complementary color overlay) + thermal sublimation technology. The principle of subtractive coloring is chosen because the yellow (Y), magenta (M), and cyan (C) triple complementary colors generate black, so the YMC method can effectively shorten the time it takes to print black. Sublimation technology is a specialized technology for image output, also known as sublimation printing. This technique is very similar to heat transfer. It uses the dye on the ribbon to heat the print head to attach it to the carrier medium. The difference is that there is a procedure for dye sublimation. Depending on the heat applied by the print head, the amount of dye that has been vaporized on the carrier medium changes, resulting in a continuous tone image print effect.
Second, Acer's FotoPrisa 300P output based on the principle of subtractive color, FotoPrisa 300P uses a corresponding technical model, from the yellow, goods, blue three complementary color cover overlay image recovery, similar to color printing. To do this, the FotoPrisa 300P must use a dedicated thermal sublimation printing paper, Acer Peripherals. This thermal sublimation printing paper has a bearing coating that enables thermal image transfer. Therefore, non-sublimation printing images cannot be used on the FotoPrisa 300P machine. In fact, the FotoPrisa 300P printing process is divided into two major steps of initialization and separation heat transfer. In the first step, the machine dynamically locates the paper and confirms the image range of the paper. In the second step, the machine will print the yellow, blue and green images on paper like a paper in a thermal transfer mode to complete one image. The output of the image.
Third, the main technical indicators Although the market position of FotoPrisa 300P is home users, but the machine's maximum resolution is still designed to 300 × 600dpi, consistent with most professional sublimation printers. The YMC's grading samples are each 8 bits, ie 256 colors. In this way, the composite color gamut can reach 24 bits and the total amount is 16777216 colors. Theoretically speaking, it can fully meet the requirements of the human eye for color resolution capability. The FotoPrisa 300P uses YMC ribbon cassettes. Each ribbon cassette can support the output of 50 photographs. The area of the print area is 90 x 125 mm, which is equivalent to a 5 inch print. The actual image area is 1200 x 1500 pixels. 101.5 × 148 mm, with a capacity of 25 sheets. The maximum power consumption of the machine during operation is 135 watts, and the power consumption at rest is about 15 watts.
Fourth, the operating platform and drivers for the family, so the FotoPrisa 300P requires the operating system of the computer should be "Windows" 95 or 98 systems. Therefore, the randomly carried driver is designed for "Windows". Due to limited conditions, we have not connected the machine to the Linux public operating system, but in theory we can obtain the support of the Linux platform through necessary settings or intermediary software. However, during the testing process, we found that even under the Windows 98 platform, the original package driver (CD-ROM) of the FotoPrisa 300P may not be installed by automatic navigation. At this time, it is necessary to exit the software navigation interface detected by the optical drive, and manually install the driver of the machine. The specific method is to start the "Add Printer" program from the printer item in the "Settings" column, select "Local Printer (L)" in the next step, and then double-click "Browse" to select the CD-ROM drive letter (such as E:\) , and then double-click Addprint from the folder (F), select the appropriate system mode in the directory, such as WIN98 or WIN95, then pop up a dialog box to select the language, if you need Simplified Chinese interface, you can double-click SChinese, this At the time, the configuration file a6usb.inf will appear in the file name field, after which it is determined that the driver will be installed automatically, and the management icon of the FotoPrisa 300 Series will be generated. Whether or not it is determined as the system default printing device depends on the actual situation. Of course, using the printer management program can change the default device at any time. In order to test the generality of the FotoPrisa 300P, we chose a self-tuning computer. The basic configuration was: AMD clocked at 350 megabits CPU (downgrade of 66 megabytes at 100 megahertz), and the low-end Kirin 577 motherboard (5 octave). Jumper to CPU running at 333MB, 64MB RAM. Since the machine we used for testing has set the Cheyenne Bitware (fax software) as the default device, the FotoPrisa 300P, as an optional device, also occupies the LPT1 print port. The practical use found 300P universality is satisfactory. The Ulead Photo Express 2.0 SE software, which is accompanied by the popular version of the original package, and the FotoPrisa 300P constitute an ideal small office and family color printing system.
V. Photo output and effect evaluation Due to the inconsistency in the display part of each computer, the effect of the same image on different computer screens is also inconsistent, and there is also an inconsistency between the output of the output device and the print. Therefore, we used the FotoPrisa 300P to make a sample adjustment process, constantly comparing the sample with the display image, adjusting the display so that the display image is as close as possible to the tone of the sample, and obtaining the necessary error experience. The printer can print a variety of image formats, but the factory recommended the use of five main formats, namely. Bmp,. Giff,. Jpg,. Tga, and tif. We know that when you save the same photo in different formats, some of the images will lose some of their quality. Therefore, in the test, we specifically selected the .tif (Tagged Image File Format), .jpg (Joint Photographic Experts Group), and .tga (tdrga) formats to output the same photo with the same accuracy, given the 32-bit feature on .tga. The order failed at 300P, so no difference was found between the three output images (Figure 3). Therefore, you can use the .jpg format with high image compression to output photos with confidence, which greatly saves the storage space of photo files.
For comparability, we used a traditional (5-inch) print to scan at 300 dpi, and then slightly adjusted the output on the FotoPrisa 300P, comparing the output to the original. We have found that digitally reproduced photographs have the same loss of color levels as traditional photographs. However, they are limited. If the original film is removed without reference, the color rendering of the dye-sublimation printing film is still confusing. Quite satisfactory; however, there is a significant decrease in image sharpness compared with the original film, which may be related to scanning equipment and other related technologies. We tried a 7-inch scan, and the output image was significantly improved in sharpness (Figure 4). When printing images in 4 equal parts, the reduced image is excellent in color saturation and sharpness (Figure 5). Therefore, the amount of original photo information is very important. We scanned a photo of Notre Dame from the French tourist album. The original film was about 10 inches. After going to the net, we synthesized new photos by Photoshop software and then output it with 300P. The effect was very satisfactory (Figure 6). In addition, the output of the specially processed electronic image on the 300P can basically meet the sample requirements (Figure 7). With the contrast between the same photo and the color inkjet printer, we believe that the 300P is indeed closer to the traditional photo style. Other aspects of the test include photos taken by digital cameras, as well as disc files and downloaded images. The results show that the output of FotoPrisa 300P is almost the same as that of a professional dye-sublimation printer. Most of its print traces can only be observed under a magnifying glass, and can fully meet the needs of home and small electronic digital image stores. Especially effective in making greeting cards, badges, output standards, and online photos. And the FotoPrisa 300P is compact, flexible and portable.
In summary, the performance and price ratio of the Acer FotoPrisa 300P thermal sublimation printer is quite outstanding. It is currently one of the most competitive products in the small digital printing system. The disadvantage is that the cost of consumable materials is higher than that of traditional darkrooms, and the software system has yet to be perfected.
