Discarded mobile phones will become a new source of environmental pollution

The United States Environmental Protection Research Institute INFORM issued a report a few days ago that more and more mobile phones and other wireless communication devices have been abandoned. If they are buried in soil or sent to incinerators, they will certainly cause environmental pollution, and it is feasible to redesign products and recycle them. way.

According to the data provided by this agency, the number of mobile phone users in the United States has increased from 340,000 in 1985 to 128 million last year, and mobile phones are generally updated once every 18 months. Since 2005, 130 million mobile phones have been abandoned in the United States each year, which means that 65,000 tons of “wireless waste” is produced each year.

The raw materials for cell phones and accessories contain a variety of toxic substances such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and heat-resistant chemicals. The materials of other wireless communication devices such as personal digital assistants, pagers, PDAs, and MP3 music players are similar to those of mobile phones and are also harmful to the environment when they are abandoned.

The report said that mobile phone materials contain a variety of persistent and bioaccumulative toxic substances (PBT), which can cause cancer and lead to neurological and developmental diseases, especially to children. Now Europe and Japan have or plan to eliminate materials containing this substance in electronic products, but many U.S. manufacturers and major industry organizations are still actively lobbying to prevent the ban of these materials.

The research organization recommended that manufacturers recycle waste mobile phones and use material incentives to encourage users to return the products that are eliminated.
